Check out the Birds

Check out the birds

Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!

Luke 12:24 (MSG)

The weather is finally starting to take a more consistently warm turn these days, and I am starting to see

and hear some of my favorite birds more often. Looking at one this morning made me think of this particular line of Jesus' teaching.

I think when Jesus said “check out the birds" (or "consider the ravens" in some other translations) he actually meant to stop, go outside and sit down and watch some birds for awhile. I think Jesus knew that we can see the love and care of our creator when we slow down long enough to observe the beautiful and complex creation of God all around us.

Maybe if we could consider what Jesus is saying here, we wouldn’t have to worry so much about the little details in life so much. Maybe we could actually enjoy the life that God has given us. Maybe we would finally realize that enjoyment is truly realized when we share out of the abundance God has given us, rather than give in to a mindset of scarcity and hoarding.

So today, in the middle of the week, make an intentional choice to slow down a bit. Go watch some birds. Think about how wonderful God is and share that gratitude with him. It might just change your perspective on your whole day!
