God is Love

Who or what is “God”?

We all use a lot of different language to try to describe the Higher Power and Spiritual Reality that many of us have experienced.

By definition, if God is beyond our comprehension and understanding, then God is kinda hard to pin down.

Over the years, I have heard a lot of descriptions about what God is like for sure. Many of these involve God being an old Zeus-like deity in the sky who is very concerned about how well I measure up to the rules and moral standards of other people…But God has to be more beautiful and transcendent than this right?

One of the things I love about Hope Fellowship is that we center our Sunday morning gatherings around conversations and discussion, rather than a sermon. This way we get to hear the story of how different people are experiencing God in their lives and in the world around them. We all benefit from this, because God is so vast that none of us can experience everything that God is up to in the world.

We have also rooted our vision of God in 1 John 4, a part of a letter in the New Testament, which says that “God is Love”. Full stop. It is a declaration that is both simple and endlessly profound. It is a description of God that is boldly specific, and also boldly inclusive of every person and creature in all the world. It is a picture of God that has captivated our imaginations, and compels us to explore more about God with awe and wonder.

Surprisingly this description of God also guides us in how to become the human beings we were created to be. If we are created in God’s image, then we are created to love. Jesus said that the most important thing that any person can do is love God with all that you are, and love your neighbor as yourself.

God is love, and God is leading us into a life defined by love.

At Hope Fellowship, we are a community of ordinary folks following God into this way of life together.

Come join us at 10am any Sunday morning at Muddy Creek .
